This is a video footage of an incident that happened in Kurdistan region of Iraq, which is under the control of two main Kurdish groups, PUK, led by the president of Iraq, and KDP, led by Massoud Barzani.
In the video footage, a person, who is either a young man or teenager, pleads for forgiveness, as he is badly beaten by a group of men, who speak Kurdish of Erbil dialect. While he is beaten up, the men use abusive words that are at a very low level. The aim is clear; to cause maximum physical and psychological pain to their victim. It can be described as extreme case of torture. The leader of the gang starts by beating the victim with his hands. Then he asks for a baton from one of his colleagues to force the victim to repent or ‘Toba’ - Toba is an Islamic concept; infidels must toba to become Muslim. When the men are tired in beating and assaulting the victim, they force him to kiss the shoe of the gang leader. In the Middle Eastern culture, this is equivalent of losing your honour.It is not much known about the young man, but what can be seen is that the gang use the headlights of at least two vehicles to illuminate the assault area. Two of the men mostly engaged in the assault, while others are watching. One of the men is sympathetic; keep saying ‘leave him’. Except for the leader who is wearing a shirtsleeve red shirt and a pair of blue trousers, the rest are in military or police uniform. Some of the men are armed, having what looks like AK-47, commonly known as Kalashnikov.
Some Kurdish websites posted relevant information about the boy and the video footage, albeit the information has not been independently verified, so it cannot be relied upon. The name of a Kurdish political group is stated in the video. We take no responsibility for that or any other comment on the website that the video is loaded.
It is for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to protect the safety and the security of all citizens. The KRG as the authority of Kurdistan must explain for the people what happened in this footage and to investigate this accident.
We undersigned demand of the KRG to issue a statement on this unfortunate incident. We also fear that the life of the victim may be at risk as the perpetrators may wish eliminate him to hide the vital evidence.
